Descripción:
El Faro Monumental de La Serena fue construido por la Armada de Chile entre 1950 y 1951 y diseñado por Jorge Cisternas Larenas, Ingeniero Civil de la Universidad de Chile. Desde su construcción se ha consolidado como la imagen característica que identifica la ciudad de La Serena.
Historia:
El Faro Monumental de La Serena, fue construido bajo el marco del “Plan Serena” del Presidente Gabriel González Videla. El faro se caracteriza por ser un elemento único y singular en el entorno urbano, siendo este su elemento característico e identitario. Su ubicación, en la intersección de Avenida del Mar y Francisco de Aguirre, es un lugar muy concurrido por turistas, siendo reconocido como un importante hito turístico nacional. Su particular condición arquitectónica y estética permiten que destaque como como un hito urbano vertical en la trama de la cuidad. Fue diseñado en un estilo neo-colonial adaptado a una versión de fortificación, etilo propio del Plan Serena. Fue declarado Monumento Nacional en la categoría de Monumento Histórico el 25 de enero de 2011. Actualmente el uso del inmueble es Marítimo o Portuario, manteniendo su uso original.
Situación Actual:
En 1958, la Armada de Chile, a cargo del Jefe Almirante Don José Toribio Merino Castro, entrego el Faro Monumental a la Municipalidad de la Serena, para que esta se hiciera cargo del mantenimiento y para contribuir ala conservación de este característico atractivo turístico de la ciudad. El 25 de enero de 2011 fue declarado Monumento Histórico (MH) según decreto N°42. El Faro Monumental de La Serena forma parte de la Ruta Patrimonial N°46, La Serena, patrimonio vivo, ubicándose en el Hito 30.
Ubicación y alrededores:
El Faro Monumental de La Serena está emplazado en la intersección de Avenida del Mar con Francisco de Aguirre, se accede frontalmente desde esta avenida. Considera el límite Oriente, la solera de Avenida del Mar, es decir, 60 metros desde el muro de la plataforma actual exterior del inmueble, incluyendo parte de las soleras norte y sur de Francisco de Aguirre. El límite Norte y Sur, son 20 metros a cada lado de la plataforma del faro, poniéndole fin en el exterior de la construcción con sus proyecciones y soleras Norte y Sur en Francisco de Aguirre. Finalmente, el límite Poniente, se extiende hasta la línea de la marea baja.
